Applying to Suite101: A Great Passive Income Site for Freelance Writers

What is Suite101?

Suite101.com is an online magazine packed with a huge variety of content. All of the online content comes from freelance writers. If you can write about it, this site has a section and topic for it. You retain the copyrights to all of your articles but Suite101 holds the twelve month electronic rights. This means for one year after the article was published on Suite101, you cannot republish the article anywhere on the web. Once the year is up, you can post your articles anywhere you choose.

How do you apply for a Freelance Writer position at Suite101?

There are no fees associated with registering with Suite101. To apply for a freelance writer position, you will have to provide your basic information, a resume, and two samples of work. Suite101 will review your information and contact you with an acceptance or a rejection. If accepted, you will officially be a contributing writer for the site.

Contributing Writers have the freedom to publish articles on any of the available topics. The writing requirements for this position are ten articles must be published within a three month period and that all editorial guidelines be followed. Upon your acceptance, you will only be able to publish one article until the section editor has reviewed and approved it. Featured writing positions are available to current contributing writers who meet the specific qualifications.

How are Freelance Writers Paid at Suite101?

Suite101 is a passive income site. Writers are not paid per page view but instead pays you a percentage per click on the ads on each article's page. This is known as revenue share. The site and the freelance writer 'share' the revenue brought in by ad clicks. Not every page view is going to result in an ad click. A few ad clicks isn't going to make the $10 minimum payout. I called it the 'MORE' system. The more articles that are published equals more page views....more page views equals more chances for ad clicks....more ad clicks equals more money. As long as your content remains viewable, you continue to receive earnings.

Payments are made monthly via paypal. In fact, most writing sites pay through your paypal account. So make sure you have created an account and verfied your information.

Suite101 was the first site that compensated in only passive income that I applied to. I rarely make any major decisions without thoroughly researching the topic. This is exactly what I did when I decided to enter the passive income market. Doesn't getting paid indefinitely for all of your published articles each month sound like a solid investment of your time and writing ability? Suite101 came highly recommended by many freelance writers because of the site's high expectancy of quality articles, the easy publishing format, and the freedom of publishing on any topic you want, as often as you want. But I left something out of the research process and realized my error a little too late.

The sign up process isn't the easiest nor is it the most difficult that I have come across. I'm not ashamed to admit I didn't get accepted on my first attempt. I worked hard on that first submission but the one thing I didn't research in great detail was Suite's publishing guidelines. That first article was a thousand word document with long winded, half page paragraphs on a overly used topic. When I got the rejection email, I didn't let it phase me. Freelance writers need a thick skin because rejections are inevitable.

I immediately went to the site and started reading articles. I read articles from different topic areas. I studied the article formats and took an average word count so I could get an idea on the average amount of words used in topics I knew I would post for. Then I took that huge narrative I wrote and revised it to resemble the formats on the Suite artices. It paid off. The same day I received my rejection email, I reapplied and was accepted with three hours. I suggest you play around with the website and study the articles in the section that most interests you before you apply. It'll increase your chances, I'll guarentee it. And that goes for ANY writing site.

Another reason I enjoy writing for Suite101 is the portfolio I am building. Suite articles rank high on Google so I get exposure that way. Because every Suite101 article I have written is linked on my profile there, I can send prospective clients to my profile to view my writing abilities!
