My Journey

Freelancing Mommie is a blog chronicling the highs and lows, good and bad, tips and tricks I have learned on my journey as a full-time freelance writer and mommie of three.

Did I always know I wanted to be a writer? YES! I loved writing, although it began as a creative outlet. I was the assistant editor and largest contributor to my high school literary magazine, along with winning several creative writing awards in various contests. In college, I changed my outlet to journalism as a field reporter for the school's newspaper, The Six Mile Post as well as contributing poems and short stories to The Old Red Kimono, the school's creative magazine. I was determined to be a writer but once I was married and started my family, my dream was put on the back burner.

In 1998, my dad brought home our first computer with Internet access and I was hooked. I remember often wondering how one found a job contributing to the ever growing information available online. I can still remember the pride I felt the first time I actually had something published online. My recipe, Chocolate Potato Candy, won honorable mention in a Food Network contest. I glorified in seeing my name online, where it still remains today, #3 for chocolate candy recipes on the FN site!

Ten years later as I found myself laid off from my job as a customer service representative due to cut backs with no other jobs in sight, I started dabbling in several poetry and short story websites that allowed user submissions. I knew right away I wasn't really into the creative side of writing anymore and wanted to focus on the more non-fiction side of writing. I didn't seriously pursue an online writing career but the plan was in action. This was my dream. I would be a published writer....I just had to figure out how.

Another year passed without much progress as other obligations took the majority of my time but my dream never faltered. However, things seemed to fall into place rather quickly. In one day's worth of research, I stumbled upon several websites (Suite101, DMS, Examiner) that were looking for freelance writers as well as many great freelance writing blogs, including one that has been an invaluable resource, No Job For Mom. With in a weeks time, I had been accepted to several different websites and had put my dream into action!

It has been a long journey since those first terrible articles scattered across the Internet, much of which is captured here on Freelancing Mommie. I have accomplished much more than I ever expected in my writing career and continue to set and reach new goals often. I depended upon mostly active income in the beginning but am proud to say that 72% of my income is now passive.

I hope you enjoy Freelancing Mommie! Thank you for visiting!
