Freelance Writing Inspiration: No Job for Mom

Entering the freelance writing field full-time is a big decision. This is because of two very important factors: there are thousands upon thousands of writers trying to accomplish the same thing and it takes time, dedication, time, hard work, time, inspiration, and oh yeah... TIME.  Freelance writing is not an instant get rich quick career. But receiving a steady supply of income from residual writing is an attainable goal for many freelance writers. Because this type of writing pays off long after you hit the submit button and the earning potential is endless. It is always an inspiration to view other freelance writers who have reached true success. Enter Felicia from No Job for Mom.

I am an avid follower of No Job for Mom. I stumbled upon Felicia's site one day when I was desperately looking for fellow freelance writers who had real tips and information to offer from a been there and done that mentality. Don't get me wrong...what works for one isn't guaranteed to work for another. But real information like Felicia contributes gives other writers the ability to see things differently and to gain inspiration. And inspire us she has with her recent post. Not only did Felicia's yearly income report inspire me about my freelance writing career, time, and contributions but it inspired me to work on my own writing statistic spreadsheets. I haven't touched them in months. Maybe I had a forbearing that I wouldn't like what the spreadsheets had to say.

am impressed with the actual amount of my writing income. I haven't completed the yearly spreadsheet yet because December isn't completed. Here are Novembers stats:

Active Income
Passive Income
Total Income
$1800.46
$61.80
$1862.26

96.6% of my income was from active income sites/clients and received 92.75% of my writing time.

However, comparing my own chart with Felicia's was quite discouraging. And I don't mean the income amounts. My residual income was a very small part of my total income and was a result of my spending so much time writing for active income. But I, like so many freelance writers,  have responsibilities that require the weekly/monthly paychecks. Active income is great for this reason. But that is no excuse for neglecting my passive income contributions. I contributed regularly to Suite101 and a few other revenue earning site but not as much as I should.

I have said it tons of times...my goal is a total residual income. Felicia's post inspired me to reevaluate how and where I spent my writing work time and where my focus will be in 2011. It's funny that this happened...I posted yesterday about my 2011 goals. It is a good thing I added a sentence about altering and changing my goals...because it may just come to that.

Big congrats to Felicia on her success. Much thanks for taking the time to give us honest, detailed information to help further our own freelance writing careers. And thank you for sharing a look into your financial information to validate a much know policy: Residual income is the road to true success!
