What a wonderful comment to receive bright and early this morning! Initially, my softie side came out and allowed a tiny part of me to be stung by the comment. After that brief moment, I took a good look at that way the comment was typed and realized a teen/young adult must have stumbled upon my blog and left the comment to my 2011 Goal post. Do I blame them? Not at all! For a person who probably could care less about freelance writing, cooking, parenting or crafting with kids then this blog would seriously stink. But it did lead me to take a good look at my stats.
I took a few blogging courses and read tons of information from real bloggers before I created Freelancing Mommie. Statistically, it can take months to years to have a steady stream of followers/viewers. I knew this when I started this blog and prepared myself for months of writing posts that nobody but myself read. So why do I feel so disappointed that my views are around 10 per day? That is actually a pretty good amount of views for a new blog. But I am disappointment in myself for my lack of dedication to it. I think I have skipped a few vital steps in making Freelancing Mommie a success.
What have I done wrong here?
I regularly post. But I think I post things that are more geared toward me, than the reader. Posts about writing sites I like...recipes...crafts I do with my kids...other blogs I enjoy...are all topics that seem to be inspired by my own wants/needs/interests. For example: I am really happy with Suite101 so then I posted a quick run down of the site for other writers looking for information. This is fine but to make this blog more geared toward freelance writing in general I should post about all types of writing sites...not just the ones I prefer. The same with the other topics. This blog should have variety and be packed with useful information for the different topics I write about. Of course, it is still important that I am happy with it. I just need to learn to combine the two so Freelancing Mommie is more objective.
I am severely lacking in the marketing department. I often forget to add my blog's link to any forum or blog post comments. I forget to add it to my profile when I create one for a site. I forget to link it in articles at sites that allow it. About half the time, I remember to Tweet it but rarely post it to other social marketing sites. Marketing is important in getting the Freelancing Mommie out there....I finally understand.
The last thing I believe I have slacked on is the actual blog design. The blog should be designed to function well while appearing attractive. I have yet to learn how to take the subtitle/category box under the blog title and add categories. Nor do I know how to list my posts into those categories. Instead of learning how to accomplish this, I have left it alone. Now, one lone category stands out......"HOME." LOL
To wrap up my long winded negative ramble, I plan to rededicate myself to Freelancing Mommie in 2011 and follow through on making this blog an easy viewing and functioning source of information for freelance writings moms: including subtopics like crafting and cooking.
