There are two types of income in the freelance writing world. I prefer a passive income because getting paid many times for one article is a lot better than getting paid once for an article. But I have yet to reach the point in my career where I can write exclusively for passive income sites and get paid well. This is my long term goal and slow and steady steps get me closer to it everyday. I read tons of information on these two type of freelancing income and much of it was technical and hard to decipher through. So here they are in a simple nut shell.
Active Income for Freelance Writers
Active income is similar to hourly wages. The most common practices in this type of income are pay per word and pay per assignment. Some more experienced freelance writers do get pay by the hour. I could go on and on explaining how this works but the bottom line is one paycheck for one article. If you write a 500 word article for a private client at .10 per word then you will receive $50 in compensation. Once you receive that $50, the pay for that article is over.
I have a permanent client that pays me x cents per word for x amount of words in x amount of articles every week. I am lucky to find such as opportunity and will be sad when the contract is over. But because I know this active income isn't forever; I write for other sites, focusing on passive income.
I also contribute at sites that pay active wages to freelance writers to complete topics submitted by clients. This type of income lets you know exactly what to expect as payment for the article and allows you to figure up how many articles must be completed to bring the amount of income you need. There are no surprises with active income. There are several popular sites that pay on a much smaller scale than private clients for articles. Check out TextBroker and WritersAccess. I contribute occasionally to both sites and my experience has been overall a good one. Once accepted, you look through available topics and get busy writing. The more active income articles you complete, the higher your income. And from experience, it takes a lot of time and a lot of articles to make a decent income....day after day. Because you have to keep writing these types of articles to continue to get paid.
Passive Income for Freelance Writers
Now this type of income is slower to build but the benefits make it worth your while. There are many wonderful sites available that allow you to post your finished articles and receive revenue pay. The sites' actual pay scales vary...some pay for page views, some pay for ad clicks and some pay for both. The bottom line is the more articles you post, the more page views and ad clicks (AdSense) you receive...the higher your income rises. And the best news is that this type of freelance writing income doesn't stop coming in. As long as people are viewing and clicking ads your article pages then you are still receiving compensation. There is not a start and stop date for this income....it's the kind that keeps giving and giving.
Suite101 is one of my favorite sites because not only am I receiving passive pay for my published articles; I am given the creativity to write on a huge variety of topics at a site that insists in the highest of quality work. I get paid this month for things I wrote last month.....get paid this year for articles wrote last year....get paid in 2012 for articles wrote in 2010...well, you get the picture. And the more articles I submit over time, the higher my revenue pay will be.
To reach my goal of only passive income as a freelance writer, I post new items a few times a week at various passive income sites. I can't go into much detail but I will say in the last three months, my page views have increased by about 383% and my income has tripled. There are other ways to receive compensation for freelance writing...I'll touch those later.
